You can bone weight copy the SC4 version to the SC5, but that depends on how the face meshes line up. I wanted to try to convert yoshimitsu's MDL file to a XPS file because MDL files apparantly don't have facial rigs and luckily Yoshi has a wooden face which doesn't need posing. I'm stuck however. I'd say forget about that and switch to Blender for editing. Add a bone to the weapon either at the center or at the place it usually should be held, then place it at character's hand, parent that bone to the wrist, this way you get a pose-able weapon in case you need to adjust it further. Converting .mdl into .smd with noesis sometimes messes with the materials. I would suggest decompiling the .mdl. Decompiling gives me different SMDs. I used Noesis to generate a SMD file and fired that up in Blender. The bone joints appear to be functional. Have you tried decompiling the .mdl files into .smd with cannonfodder's mdldecompiler and importing that into 3dsmax? I usually do this with Source models to avoid messing up their weights/rigs.
