Developer Lectures, Talks, etc Thread

Post by MisterHentai »

Thought of making this thread for any type of serious game developer lectures and talks, so that anyone with an interest in the behind scenes and processes of game development or are actually wanting to get into the industry will have some useful information.

To start off, this awesome lecture by Mark Cerny, the PS4's Chief Architect, talking about his history in the games business and how he got to where he is today as a major Sony figure.

With Sony and the PS4 being in a good mindset of the gaming population lately, what a way to start, and getting some knowledge about how it came to be. :P

Well if you remember what the original PlayStation was going to be.

And it's more about respect for the major developer figures at Nintendo since Mark is right about that, they have been there for decades and still going.

Yeah I remember seeing that ages ago.

If Shenmue 1 and 2 gets re-released at least, would be awesome!

But with Sega being the way they are and Yu Suzuki's relationship with them currently, doubt much will happen.

Here is the QuakeCon 2013 Keynote with John Carmack, infamously known for his long but really good technical talks. And remember, he recently took the role of the Chief Technology Officer at Oculus VR too!

With Ken Kutaragi getting a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 14th Annual Game Developers Choice Awards recently, Mega64 were hired to do short film detailing the "true story" of his success to the PlayStation.

-----------------------------------------------------------

Yu Suzuki gave an interesting talk about the development of Shenmue, and even researching the idea of Kickstarter for the 3rd game too. :o
Shenmue was an ambitious game for its time, incorporating a massive open world, environments full of people and activity and a complex combat system, all of which was delivered using state of the art graphics. It was a huge project and, as director Yu Suzuki revealed during the Shenmue postmortem panel at GDC 2014, it wasn't without some bizarre development bugs. In fact, up to 300 were found every day, according to Suzuki.

Without some form of compression, said Suzuki (through interpreter Mark Cerny), all of the content in Shenmue would have required 50-60 CD-ROMs. As that would have been ... prohibitive to the average consumer, the Shenmue team had to come up with ways to save space, though this sometimes created unexpected results. Like cats walking on two legs.

Joystiq
The Dreamcast had yet to be released at this time, and Suzuki based his development on personally predicted hardware specifications for the console. But in 1998, in order to become a fresh, "killer app" for the upcoming Sega machine, Virtua Fighter RPG: Akira's Story had its name changed to Shenmue: Chapter 1: Yokosuka. The characters and theme were changed. Each chapter of the story would be released as a separate title for the Dreamcast.

Some IGA talk at GDC too, especially coming off his recent departure from Konami.
When Igarashi took the reins of the Castlevania series, one of the team's primary goals was to increase the amount of time that players would spend with the game. Several options were considered, including adjusting the difficulty or changing the ending of the game to promote multiple plays. In the end, the team decided to increase the amount of exploration.

"We really wanted to extend the life of the game," said Igarashi, "and the one game that popped up in our heads was Legend of Zelda, an exploration-filled action game. Pretty much our entire team, including myself, were huge fans of the game, and we wanted to make something very similar. So now you know the origin of inspiration actually wasn't Metroid."

Joystiq
Igarashi said in game development, too many action franchises fall into the trap of catering only to mature, dedicated fans. This results in the company making changes that spike the series' difficulty level and heighten the barrier of entry for new players. When working on the Castlevania series, Igarashi said he and his team strove to make changes that would be more welcoming. The team wanted to remove the stress on players by implementing a more comfortable set of controls.

The team began building an exploration-focused side-scroller with a setup similar to The Legend of Zelda. The team decided to add a progression system that would level up players as they defeated enemies, as well as one that allowed them to capture monsters in order to flesh out a map.

"We looked back at older titles and we had non-human players that possessed transformation abilities," Igarashi said through a translator. "That's how we settled on our main character. But I had to stop and think about ÔÇö where did this fit in the story's timeline?"

One year on I see!

Probably easier in the Final Fantasy thread, but would also be appropriate here due to the length and subject matter.

Here is "The Visual Evolution Of Final Fantasy ÔÇô By Art Director Yusuke Naora" (Also current Art Director for Type-0 and FFXV), where he did a college lecture at SMU Guildhall in Texas.

An interesting recent panel with none other than Troy Baker himself, talking about his role in upcoming major games and all that.
