Buying a new laptop, need some tips

Post by iheartibuki »

Well, my birthday is fast approaching and I've decided to gift myself a nice "gaming" laptop, lol. I was initially eyeing a Sony Vaio S Series 15 laptop as seen here, though reading reviews everywhere including CNET's made me think twice about getting it, due to mediocre performance compared to other "gaming" laptops in the same price range. Plus a lot of the reviews complained about finicky touchpads, which I would regularly use when I'm out without access to a flat table.

Now, while reading up on competing laptops, I read some really good things about Origin PCs. The EON-15S is currently on my radar, with lots of performance under the hood plus most of the features I'm looking for in my next work/gamestation. BTW, I have to get something mobile, so a desktop is not a choice for me at this time as I don't have the space for it here at home. Anybody ever bought an Origin laptop before? Care to give me some feedback on their durability and support? Any other suggestions are welcome! :D

Well I never bought an Origin Laptop before ( I only use my laptop for non gaming stuff, there are games there but only few to none games that are current gen ) but it sounds great to me ! O_O

nice resolution for the screen and the graphics card is absolutely great, memory is good too ! ( I use Corsair :P ) I wonder how much it is though :fdat:

also about overclocking, is it true about what they say that it's bad for your PC and stuff like that ? :?

Blasphemy! as Masturrr Race you shall game only on desktop PC!!! :p

@Jet
yeah some overclocking can damage your hardware if youre not careful. youre gonna need a really good cooling system for that. hmmm but recently most AMD product have built in overclocking software, you can overclock them with just a click. also it doesnt require much, you can overclock them with using just stock fan (saw someone does it on youtube before )

intel-wise you gotta find someone experienced to do it... i dont recommend doing it by yourself :?

I've always been more partial to gaming series laptops by Samsung, ASUS and Dell. They will be pricey, but if laptop is your only option then I guess you will have the money for it. I don't recommend Alienware though unless you want to feel like you're are a teenager again.

Never heard of Origin PC but then I see they are specifically U.S oriented?

And overclocking is only bad if you are a complete n00b at it. :ggl:

Most motherboards these days do come with some bundled simple overclocking software tools by the manufacturer, but generally, I wouldn't recommend them because they tend to use automatic settings i.e. the voltages. Your graphics card is the most easiest thing to overclock since it is relatively simple, and is optionally there by the driver settings, but for CPU and motherboard, alot of research and tweaking about in the BIOS will be needed for that.

It can be fun once you get into it since it's akin to say, tweaking a car, but more nerdy and at least less greasey and physical.

Lotsa lulz on this thread hahaha!

@Jet: so do you primarily use a desktop to do your awesome renders then? :D

@Zul: Sorry man, I have to betray the masturr race for now, gotta go with a mobile device. :|

@Mick: LOL, I like that Mona Lisa-Yao Ming mish mash.

@semenry: That's right! I need to be able to do high quality XNA orgies! Hahaha!

@Hentai: Dell's a no-no for me because of proprietary parts. I'll have to check the Samsung out but the offering from Asus, as good as it sounds, is a bit too heavy at close to 10 lbs. (Origin's fully loaded laptop weighs in only around 6 lbs. +) from the specs I read.

@Josh: yes I have a pussy and these laptops are getting my panties wet! :ggl:

I'm partial to the Origin PC though I just realized that the optical drive is external (for something that thick they should've been able to squeeze in a slim drive in there, and yes, I'm old fashioned :P). I'll be doing more research. I don't need to be able to play, say Crisis 3, at 1080p and 60+ fps per say (there's no PC, even desktop that's able to do this at this time afaik), but SSF4AE, SFxT and any potential fighting game coming to PC will have to run close to that speed at least. The Sony Vaio is able to run SSF4AE at around 51 fps but with the asking price it has to be able to do it beyond 60 fps. And ya, after I customized an Origin EON-15S, price came down to 4 grand plus. :fdat: !
